Dalila et Samson, par exemple corresponds with a desire to write a sort of danced oratorio for a man and a woman.
The treatment of the human body in the overflowing universe in paintings by Rubens and Jordaens, the rigueur and the modesty of Dutch 17th century portraits and the music of that period inspired the piece.
The Baroque style can be found in the relationships between men and women and knocks a predictable or conventional situation off balance to reach a state of paroxysm resulting in a role-reversal, a confusion of gender and a disruption of perception. The piece uses these themes present in painting by freely appropriating pictorial representations and musicals, characters - legendary and biblical couples in order to attain what could be described as a low-key Baroque style.
